Blue Whiting
Lat. Micromesistius poutassou
Blue Whiting is widely distributed in the North-East Atlantic from Morocco to Iceland and Spitsbergen and is therefore an important link in the marine food chain. The blue whiting belongs to the cod family, and has the same underhung jaw as its well known cousin. The name stems from the dark colour in the mouth of this small white fish.
The species has become increasingly important to the fishing industries of northern European countries. The fish is usually processed into fish meal and oil. However, the blue whiting are now more often sold as human consumption fish (frozen) for China, Africa, Russia and other countries in Eastern Europe. The blue whiting in the North-East Atlantic mainly occupies the economic zone (EEZ) of the Faroe Islands, the European Union, Iceland and Norway.
