Capelin
Lat. Mallotus villosus
The Capelin is an almost perfectly camouflaged fish. Transparent olive to bottle green above, its sides are uniformly silvery below the lateral line and the scales are dotted at the margins with minute dusky specks and the belly is white. Its colouring makes it very difficult for predators to see, both from above and from the deep.
The capelin can be found in large parts of the Barents Sea. In January and February, it migrates towards the coast of North Norway, and when it is time to spawn, it moves into the fjords of Troms and Finnmark. There is also capelin north of Iceland, that migrates to the southwest coast of Iceland when they are ready to spawn.
